The past few months have been busy in terms of growth, promotion and employee recognition at EKS&H. With several teams expanding and many individuals being identified and acknowledged for their abilities, our collection of professionals continues to be one of our clients’ greatest advantages. These developments include:


Angela Angela Appleby, CPA, CITP, CISSP, CISA, CIA, has been promoted to partner in the firm’s audit service area and works in the Denver office. As the leader of the Risk Advisory Service practice, Angela assists companies with risk, internal controls and process evaluation. She specializes in conducting Service Organization Control (SOC) audits, SOX 404, IT control assessments and documentation, ISO compliance and readiness, and security audits.

Chris Chris Stuart, CPA, was promoted to partner in the firm’s tax service area and works in in the Denver office. Chris provides strategic international tax solutions to both public and privately held clients in a variety of industries. He specializes in global tax planning for inbound and outbound businesses, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, tax-efficient repatriation strategies, international tax compliance, and consolidated multinational and multistate C corporations.

Lawrence Lawrence Knutson, CPA, ABV, has been named a partner in the firm’s consulting service area and works in the Denver office. He provides businesses with a variety of specialty tax services, including engineering-based cost segregation studies, research and development tax credits, 382 studies, transaction cost studies, 280G analysis and other specialized tax projects. Although he serves clients in many industries, he frequently works with companies in the real estate, construction and development, manufacturing and high-tech industries.

Theresa Theresa McDowell, CPA, has been promoted to partner in the firm’s audit service area and works in the Denver office. As a leader in our employee benefit plan group, Theresa assists clients with addressing the compliance issues that have arisen as a direct result of the financial statement audit of their plans. Her expertise expands beyond the financial statement audit to assist clients in bringing their plans into compliance with their plan documents, as well as ERISA.


Gaylen Gaylen Hansen, CPA, EKS&H partner and director of quality assurance, was named to Accounting Today’s Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting in 2013. As the most recent chairman of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), Gaylen was identified by the publication this year for having “a passion for the professional mission of accounting.” The annual list includes an impressive collection of public officials, organization leaders, firm management and others.

Phil Phil Doty, CPA, Counsel with EKS&H, was recognized in the 2013 Who’s Who in Energy by the Denver Business Journal. Since joining EKS&H in 2002, Phil has worked with other partners at the firm in serving countless natural resources clients with their audit, tax and consulting needs. Throughout his career, he has served hundreds of oil and gas companies in all stages of business development, from start-up private equity-backed companies to large publicly traded organizations. Phil has expertise working with companies in all segments of the industry, including exploration and development.

Ryan Ryan Sanger, CPA, senior manager in the tax service area of EKS&H, has been selected by the Northern Colorado Business Report as a member of the 40 Under 40 Leaders Honor Roll for 2013. Winners of this award are identified as emerging leaders who are helping shape the future of Northern Colorado. Since starting his career with the firm seven years ago, Ryan has helped grow the Fort Collins office and has been instrumental in developing the people and the processes of the State and Local Tax (SALT) group.
