Message from the President

dearfriends

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Welcome to the Spring 2017 issue of The Leading Edge, our online publication designed to inform, educate and inspire you on the latest issues affecting the Greater Houston business community.

It takes an incredible amount of time, resources and sweat equity to install a new ERP system in any type of organization. Fortunately, PKF Texas’ Kristin Ryan has done some heavy lifting for you. Whether you’re just considering a new system or in the middle of installation, I know you’ll get many takeaways from “Top Challenges in ERP Implementation.” Here, she leads us through the top three challenges associated with a new system and the questions you’ll want to ask in each phase. This is a definite must-read article.

Did you know that the new Accounting Standards Update 2017-1 clarifies the definition of a “business”? This is very useful to know because, according to article author Chip Schweiger, the definition could affect many areas of accounting, including acquisitions, disposals, goodwill and consolidation. Here, Chip presents relevant examples and effective dates, along with a link for more information.

Our third article in this issue is from Nicole Riley, a PKF Texas audit senior manager and one our regular contributors on fraud-related topics. In “Keep Your Not-for-Profit Off the Front Page,” Nicole discusses why controls are just as important for not-for-profits, and offers several examples you’ll want to know about. These are important not only if you are a not-for-profit, but if you serve on a not-for-profit board – and even if you donate good or services.

As always, our doors are open for your feedback and comments. Tell us how we’re doing … and how we can improve our relationships with you and your organizations.

Kenneth J. Guidry, CPA
